Sewing for Purim
Purim is a Jewish festival that is both historically significant and fun! Each year the story of brave Queen Esther is retold. Children dress in costumes, listen to a dramatic reading of the Book of Esther (the megillah) and eat delicious soft filled cookie pastries called Hamantashens.
While trying to find a fun purim sewing craft for my students, I felt inspired. So, I give you:
The Happy Hamantashen!
Hamantashen’s are filled with prune, or jams or chocolate – this happy hamantashen is prune, hence the purple shnozz.
I’ve photographed the steps for creating this haymishe cutie in my instagram post here. And if you’d like a PDF of my pattern, you can find it here: HappyHamantashen. All that I ask in return is that you please share pics of your work with me – tag me in your in pic on instagram (@mythreadheads) so I can admire your/your students’ handiwork!
If you’re looking for more information about Purim – check out Aish.com or Chabad.org for a solid overview with links to further reading.
For those who celebrate: Chag Purim Sameach! For those who are finding ways to connect with their Jewish students: thanks for stopping by, you fantastic educators you!
